How Playground Grants Work
Grants are not loans, so you never pay them back. But most come with rules that shape your budget and your timeline. These three matter most.
Matching funds
Many grants pay only part of the project. A 50% match means your organization raises the other half. Rhode Island's Outdoor Recreation Grants, for example, ask for a 25% local share — and in-kind work can count.
Paid back after you buy
Most government grants reimburse you after the playground is purchased and installed. Plan to cover the full cost upfront, then submit receipts.
Who can apply
The largest state programs only accept cities, towns and other local governments. Schools, churches and daycares can partner with their town, or apply to foundations and local funders.
Grants for Your Type of Organization
Each type of organization has different options. Start with the funders that accept applications from groups like yours.
Schools and preschools
Playground Grants for Schools
Maine's Land and Water Conservation Fund accepts school jurisdictions directly. Elsewhere, schools often partner with their town for state programs, and apply to Walmart Spark Good, community foundations and local service clubs for smaller items.
Find my grantsChurches and faith-based groups
Playground Grants for Churches
Fewer funders accept churches directly, so local options matter most. Walmart Spark Good and local Rotary and Kiwanis clubs accept faith-based groups. A church-run preschool registered as a nonprofit may qualify for foundation grants.

Playground Grants for Daycares
Nonprofit childcare centers can apply to community foundations — including the Maine Community Foundation, NH Charitable Foundation and Vermont Community Foundation — and to KaBOOM! for a volunteer-built playground.

Grants for Parks and Towns
Local governments have the most options: the Land and Water Conservation Fund in every state, Massachusetts PARC, Rhode Island Outdoor Recreation Grants, Vermont Recreational Facilities Grants, block grants, and USDA grants for towns of 20,000 or fewer.
Find my grantsInclusive and accessible
Inclusive Playground Grants
Funders increasingly favor playgrounds that everyone can use. Accessible routes, ground-level play and inclusive features strengthen almost any application, and AARP's Community Challenge funds spaces for people of all ages.
Find my grantsSurfacing
Grants for Playground Surfacing
Safety surfacing is often a large share of the project cost. Include it in your state recreation grant budget, and look to local funders for top-ups and upgrades.

- An itemized quote and total budget
- A site plan or layout drawing and photos of the current space
- Proof you own the land or hold a long-term lease
